Microsoft recently announced a range of security advancements across Windows, Microsoft 365, Intune, and Defender. In their announcement post, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, Vasu Jakkal, emphasized the importance of a security-first mindset and the need to build products that are secure by default while adopting new technologies responsibly.

One notable enhancement is the improved passkeys in Windows 11 version 23H2, which will be available for preview on September 26. This update brings users closer to a passwordless future by allowing cross-device passkeys registration, similar to GitHub. Additionally, Windows Hello can now use passkeys for accessing websites or applications using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN authentication.

Intune, previously known as Windows Defender Application Control, introduces application control for businesses. This feature utilizes a trust model to ensure that only approved, secure, and trusted apps can be installed on devices.

Another significant update is the expansion of OneDrive Advanced Security to Microsoft 365 Basic. Previously only available in more expensive Microsoft 365 consumer subscriptions, OneDrive Advanced Security offers features like unlimited files in Personal Vault, expiring and password-protected sharing links, file restoration, and ransomware detection and recovery.

Microsoft Defender for Individuals now provides credit monitoring and privacy protection services for users in the U.S. This free security service safeguards sensitive data from threats when users connect to open and public Wi-Fi networks.
