Microsoft has released a temporary solution to address the camera issues that have been affecting Surface Pro X devices. However, this fix is not without its drawbacks. The cameras on the Surface Pro X stopped working on May 23 due to a Windows error, specifically “0xA00F4271 (0x80004005).” In an effort to resolve the problem, Microsoft has issued a temporary fix that allows the cameras to function again. However, this fix may disable certain camera features and potentially reduce image quality.
According to a support note provided by Microsoft, the temporary workaround may disable some camera features or lower image quality. Nevertheless, it should enable the camera to function until the device manufacturer releases an updated camera driver to permanently resolve the issue. Therefore, while your camera may work again, it may not provide the same experience as before it stopped working.
The Camera app failure specifically affects devices using the Qualcomm 8cx Gen 1, Qualcomm 8cx Gen 2, Microsoft SQ1, and Microsoft SQ2 processors. To implement the temporary fix, you need to run a registry command as an administrator from the Command Prompt and then restart your Windows device. It is vital to follow the step-by-step instructions outlined in the support note to ensure proper execution.
Microsoft cautions against applying this fix to devices where the camera is still functioning correctly or attempting to install it through alternative means, such as the Windows Registry Editor. Doing so could result in the need to reinstall the entire operating system.
While Microsoft has not provided a specific timeframe for when the issue will be fully resolved, they assure users that they are working with device manufacturers to update the camera driver. Rest assured, Microsoft will inform users when the updated driver becomes available. In the meantime, users should expect a temporary compromise on image quality from their camera.
